Wallington
Just a brief outline of Wallington's long history is summarised here. For a more detailed picture, please visit or contact St Mary's Church where you may find information and some short books that document some of the village's history. The information in these pages is sourced largely from 'A History of the County of Hertford: Volume 3' originally published by Victoria County History, London, 1912, freely available on line; and from 'An Agricultural History of the Parish of Wallington. Farming from Domesday onwards' by John WM Wallace, published by Mardleybury Publishing in 2010 (ISBN 978 0 9565052 2 4).
Wallington village is ideally positioned for settlement: wooded and well sheltered from westerly gales, with a never failing supply of fresh water from the spring, which rises at the top end of The Street. Before mains water was supplied in the 1930s, this spring provided a supply of pure water greatly superior to what was available to most north Hertfordshire villages. The spring was enclosed by a brick wall in Victorian times and the water was piped to a pump just below what is now the village hall.

The favourable position and water supply of Wallington have resulted in occupation since records began; there is evidence of Bronze Age habitation and there are several Roman sites around the village. Metley Hill, to the north of Wallington between the village and what is now the A505, is thought to have been the meeting place for the Court of the Hundred of Odsey in Saxon Times.
The land surrounding Wallington was divided into two manors (later 3) at the time of the Domesday Survey. Click below for further information on the Manors of Wallington and on the history of the church.
